Pump manufacturers have a long, successful history of working with metals and are familiar with the beneficial properties they deliver in a variety of pumping applications.

Q. Can rotary type pumps be used to pump slurries? If so, should users be aware of any special precautions?

Part 1 of this series (Pumps & Systems, March 2015) discussed what happens to a boiler feedwater (BFW) pump during plant transients.

Companies across the globe encounter an increasing number of regulatory and environmental pressures that call for new and specialized services. Technological advancements are constantly evolving to meet the high expectations of the industry and the individuals who power it. To ensure safety and maintain high levels of productivity, qualified and sustainable resources are necessary.

Choosing the right pump material to handle aggressive fluids is critical to the success of any processing operation. Aggressive fluids are those that either corrode or abrade the pumps used to handle them, including acids, caustics, reagent grade chemicals and unknown wastewater effluents.

The Jordan, Knauff & Company (JKC) Valve Stock Index was down 15.2 percent over the last 12 months, while the broader S&P 500 Index was up 14.5 percent. The JKC Pump Stock Index decreased 12.1 percent for the same time period.1

A refinery in Northwest Indiana is home to an internal power plant, which includes three high-pressure service water pumps. These pumps provide cooling water to the bearings for the forced-draft fans on top of the boiler house. They also cool two other pieces of equipment throughout the power plant.

A plant's industrial control system (ICS) is no longer an island, and a field device—once ranked low in the risk and threat analysis table—is no longer safe simply because it is protected by its own control configuration. Today, a cyberattack can be initiated at any point in a plant's interconnected industrial system.

Last month's column (Pumps & Systems, February 2014) reviewed the pump selection process and described how many users oversize pumps by adding design margins to account for unknown conditions present during the pump specification process. Design margins are similar to insurance, providing protection for unknown conditions expected in the life of the plant.

Columns

This column is about the most common mistakes pump end users make daily. It is also about how to avoid these mistakes and how to fix them.

I learned these lessons the hard way.

Part 1 of this series (Pumps & Systems, March 2015) discussed what happens to a boiler feedwater (BFW) pump during plant transients.

A reciprocating power pump, as depicted in Figure 1, is a displacement machine. It has characteristics that are different than a centrifugal pump.
