Over the course of his 41-year career in the industry, Al Hubbard has held a variety of positions, from full line sales specialist to his current role as vice president of global marketing.

A graduate of Bellarmine University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he is a long-time believer in the value of hard work and education, stating the best career advice he ever received was offered to him when he started at A.W. Chesterton at age 23: “Once you have committed to any organization, give your very best to that company and continue learning (devote five hours per week to uninterrupted study) to enhance your knowledge and value to that organization. Make your career a learning experience and you will thrive.”

Hubbard has definitely thrived in his career, excelling in his industry endeavors and serving as a mentor to many along the way. When asked what he thinks younger engineers and operators should learn to be prepared when the older generation retires, he said they “need to learn both technical skills and soft skills. This includes mastering digital literacy, sustainability practices and lifelong learning, while also developing strong communication, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.”

Hubbard also recognizes his job comes with some challenges like “making those difficult decisions, navigating interpersonal dynamics and managing expectations while also being accountable for the team’s success. This includes facing unpopular choices, giving tough feedback and ensuring the team’s well-being while maintaining high performance.”

Reflecting on his long career, Hubbard said, “It has been a sincere honor and privilege. My personal belief, working as a professional in industry over the past 41 years, is that we are as important as other professionals (doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc.) and we must continue to learn, study and enhance our knowledge to keep pace with industry trends [and] changes while continuously achieving performance results.”
