Rick Perry’s experience with the electric power industry goes back decades.
As governor of Texas from 2000 to 2015, Perry pushed for the growth of the state’s wind energy sector. Texas is far and away No. 1 in the U.S. for installed wind capacity, reaching close to 30 GW by 2020. Due to Texas’ key location for natural gas production, it also ranks tops in gas-fired power generation capacity.
Perry was President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Energy and was confirmed in 2017. During his two-year tenure heading up DOE, Perry advocated for an “all of the above” energy mix, including renewables, nuclear and fossil fuels. In 2018, Perry’s DOE announced $105.5 million in additional funding for solar power research.
The former governor presided over the beginning of the energy transition in Texas and nationwide as DOE secretary. He is expert on the interaction between government and industry in the electricity market.
Perry ran for president in 2012 and 2016. Prior to succeeding George W. Bush as Texas Governor, in 1999 Perry was elected as the state’s first Republican Lieutenant Gov. since reconstruction. He also served as Texas Commissioner of Agriculture for eight years.
