FRANKENTHAL, Germany (April 3, 2017) — KSB has supplied 21 pumps to Emschergenossenschaft for use in the Emscher canal, Europe's largest wastewater project.

The pumps, employed at two separate pumping stations in Bottrop and Gelsenkirchen, are specially modified for the project. According to KSB, the pumps have special casings designed with tangential discharge nozzles. KSB engineers also optimised the pump impellers to increase efficiency without sacrificing operation reliability. The biggest pump sets have a drive rating of 470 kW and handle up to 6480 cubic metersper hour.

KSB’s Halle/Saale factory produced the pumps for the Emscher project, including two pumps specifically manufactured for the Gelsenkirchen pumping station.

The Bottrop and Gelsenkirchen pumping stations lift wastewater from the eastern Emscher valley to higher level sewer sections, which direct water to waste water treatment plants operated by Emschergenossenschaft. The 51-kilometer Emscher Canal collects waste water produced by more than 1.8 million people, in addition to industrial plants and businesses in the area. The canal transports the water to a treatment plant in Bottrop and another in Dinslaken.
