While industry leaders like to promote diversity in the work place, it doesn’t matter as much if the public doesn’t see it. That’s the case in several sectors of the pump industry.

Owler released its 2017 Perceptions of Corporate Leadership Team Diversity report earlier this week. The study examines how companies perceive corporate leadership team diversity.

Owler says it’s the world’s leading source for community-based business insights and its data comes from more than 10,000 inputs from members of the Owler community.

Across the U.S., Owler compared perceptions of companies in the public and private sector in different industries. According to the report, the average diversity perception score for industrial goods and services companies was 9.8 percent lower than the median.

Chemicals, metals and mining came in at 4.9 percent lower than the median. Food and beverages is at 6.6 percent lower than the median. Energy and utilities fared better, as the results found they were right at the median.

“News flash for executives: You’re being watched,” Owler’s CEO and founder Jim Fowler said in a press release. “Members of the Owler Community are following your every move. And, for many of you, they weren’t impressed with the diversity of your company’s leadership team. Knowing that, we want to invite those who had a strong showing to take pride in having established a reputation for embracing diversity. And for those who didn’t fare as well, we invite you to reflect on what can be done now and in the future to become known for being more diverse than you are today.”
