Many industries are interested in reducing fugitive emissions. Several standards and end user efforts work toward this goal:

Standards groups in the U.S. and abroad have been actively advocating for compression packing used in valve stem sealing. Some of the more relevant provisions and changes are outlined in this article.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the oil and gas market is highly competitive. Petrochemical plants must provide services with as little disruption as possible to maintain production and meet market demands. These facilities handle hazardous materials that require constant monitoring, and the equipment in these challenging environments is typically difficult to access and maintain.

Predictive monitoring of critical rotating and non-rotating equipment is important for successful plant operation. Two end users benefited from this type of real-time monitoring of their critical assets. They were alerted to small abnormalities that could have escalated to expensive interruptions, helping maintenance personnel take a more preventive approach.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas in a liquid form that is clear, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive and non-toxic. It is produced when natural gas is cooled to minus 259 F (-161.66 C) through a process known as liquefaction.

The North South Interconnection System Project (NSISP) is one of South Australian Water Corporation’s (SA Water) biggest infrastructure projects in the Adelaide metropolitan area. SA Water built the $403 million project to connect the north and south drinking water distribution systems and to increase access to a desalination plant.

All pumps should be tested regularly, but wastewater pumps are at the top of the list because they are especially susceptible to changing system conditions. Even if a pump operates at its best efficiency point (BEP) at startup, many conditions will change during its lifetime of operation, including:

The U.S. infrastructure for the transmission, treating, storing and distribution of water requires drastic changes because of its increasing inability to sustain the new demands for potable water and water recycling. The majority of water treatment plants in the U.S. are suffering from old infrastructure technology, limited processing capacity and unpredictable weather.

An article in the October 2013 issue of Pumps & Systems discussed how to minimize leaks by applying proper design and material-selection standards. This article details new codes that have been established because the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is currently updating certain standards, including ISO 15848 Parts 1 and 2.

For those of you old enough to remember Lawrence Welk, you’ll notice that the title of this brief column is the final quote from his show’s closing song. I am still a loyal fan of his reruns today.

I received many comments from Pumps & Systems readers on "How to Calculate Pump Specific Speed" (Pumps & Systems, January 2015) and "How Efficien

A reciprocating power pump, as depicted in Figure 1, is a displacement machine. It has characteristics that are different than a centrifugal pump.

In today’s high-volume pumping applications, energy efficiency and cost control are more important than ever.
