There are many courses on how to size a centrifugal pump. In the past, the only solution in many cases was to trim the impeller to make it work properly or to close a valve to achieve the right flow. Now, with the use of variable speed drives, we have found new ways of doing things.

In the last 10 years, the use of permanent magnet motor technology has really started to take off in the pump industry. Permanent magnet motors have been around since the 1960s, originally only DC powered, but the advances for AC controlled motors began in the 1980s due to the advances in microelectronics and power semiconductor devices. This webinar will highlight how this technology can benefit pumping applications.

When pump systems operate inefficiently, the added electrical cost cuts into profitability for business owners or increases funds needed from taxpayers to keep the municipal water supply going. When pumps operate inefficiently this can also result in higher maintenance costs. This webcast will present some basic steps needed to assess an existing pump system and what steps to take in terms of making improvements that will help reduce electrical costs and improve system reliability.

Participants can expect to learn and understand:

In large projects where the pump energy is only a fraction of the total energy consumed, it has often resulted in over-sized pumps based on worst case conditions where in many cases were never encountered. Too often a pump or pump system was sized based on a design condition that was at or very close to a particular pumps highest efficiency. What may not have been considered at the time was the duty cycle and how far off that point of highest efficiency the pump or pumps would actually be operating.
