Are AWWA pump standards aligned with Hydraulic Institute standards?
Hydraulic Institute

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has published more than 150 standards for the water industry. Three
of the AWWA standards cover pumps and are published as American National Standards, approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). They are titled as follows:

  • ANSI/AWWA E102 Submersible Vertical Turbine Pumps
  • ANSI/AWWA E103 Horizontal Centrifugal and Vertical Line Shaft Pumps
  • ANSI/AWWA E110 Solids Handling Pumps for Wastewater Applications

Generally speaking, the AWWA standards cover the minimum requirements of design, testing and delivery for municipal water and wastewater pump types within scope.

The Hydraulic Institute (HI) publishes more than 30 American National Standards covering pump design, application, operation, performance, installation, system design, maintenance and testing. These standards primarily cover topics
that apply across many industries, including municipal water and wastewater. Therefore, the AWWA pump standards reference HI standards and guidelines for the definition of the pump types and nomenclature, installation, operation, performance and testing (including ANSI/HI 9.6.1, 9.6.3, 9.6.4, 9.6.6, 9.6.8, 9.8, 11.6, 14.1-14.2, 14.3, 14.4 and 14.6). So AWWA and HI pump standards are aligned in this respect and do not conflict.
